Multi-sensor systems cost more to integrate, test, and maintain. They also require cleaner interfaces and more disciplined commissioning. That complexity is worth paying only when the mission truly benefits from multiple kinds of evidence. If not, the extra architecture can become overhead instead of operational value.

Another useful test is whether the second or third sensor changes an operator decision that the first sensor cannot close confidently. If the answer is yes, the integration burden is often justified. If the answer is no, a simpler architecture may remain the better engineering choice.

This is why the best multi-sensor programs define the decision each added layer is supposed to improve before they buy it. Fusion is valuable when it removes a real ambiguity, not when it merely adds another feed to monitor. That discipline is what separates a layered system from a pile of sensors, keeps complexity tied to a measurable operational gain, and prevents the architecture from growing faster than the operator benefit.
